This is proven by basic human psychology. Any fights for freedom were actually fought for survival reasons, not for lofty ideals. As long as basic needs (and I mean bare basics like a small non-freezing room to sleep in some shared accommodation and basic sustenance food) are met by the state (mostly) no one will move a finger.
Please understand psychology 101 before you place your hopes on automatons, because, TPTB understand behavioural psychology and they will always provide a basic standard of living even if that is very basic and nothing equal to what is enjoyed and expected today.
But you do not need to be a psychology expert to understand the game that is played. It is pretty clear but you need to read a bit of philosophy, psychology, social science and understand what motivates an individual.
Humans are programmed to take the path of the least resistance.
We admire those historical exceptions because they did what we are not willing to. If taking the path of most resistance would be the normal we would not be admiring the revolutionaries of the ages.
